2011 President
AnnMarie Papa, DNP, RN, CEN, NE-BC, FAEN, is currently serving as president of the Emergency Nurses Association board of directors, the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development and injury prevention. Papa’s term ends in December of 2011.
Papa has been an emergency nurse for 33 years, working as a staff nurse, manager and director. She is currently the Clinical Director, Emergency Nursing of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Papa has been an ENA member for more than 30 years and is currently a lifetime member. She has served a number of roles in ENA at the local, state and national levels. Some notable roles include serving as a member of the Leadership Conference Committee in 2004 and 2005, and then assuming the role of chairperson in 2006 and 2007. Other areas of service include representing ENA on the American College of Emergency Physicians Clinical Policies Committee and Regionalization Task Force. Also serving on the Manager’s, Elections Process and Annual Meeting Committees, she is currently co-editor for the Manager’s Forum in the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Papa has presented on many topics related to emergency nursing regionally and nationally and is a member of the ENA Key Concepts for Managers Core Faculty.
At the state and local level she has served as president, president elect, treasurer and director and has been a delegate to General Assembly on numerous occasions. Papa has been the recipient of local and national ENA awards for leadership and education. Among them are the national Manager’s Award and the Professionalism Award. She is the only Pennsylvania nurse to receive all three Pennsylvania state awards: the Leadership Award, the Mary Bailey Education Award, and the Rita Celmer Spirit Award. She has also been recognized regionally by the Nursing Spectrum with the Excellence in Management Award, and by ADVANCE for Nurses with the Best Leader Award. She credits the awards with the recognition that she has been fortunate to work with great staff and an awesome Pennsylvania state delegation.
An avid advocate for emergency nursing, Papa has served on the ADVANCE for Nurses Advisory Board and the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania’s Capacity Management Advisory Board. She is adjunct faculty for Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
Papa received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1977 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 1995, from Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. She earned her Doctorate in Nursing Practice in 2010 from Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Papa has been certified in emergency nursing for more than 25 years, and was inducted as a Fellow into the Academy of Emergency Nursing in 2006. She is looking forward to working with all of you during her presidential year in 2011 to continue to build a valuable organization and provide resources to our members.
